The Ethnic Dance Club

The Ethnic Dance Club was founded at Dougherty Valley High School in 2018. Our purpose is to create a community on campus where students are comfortable sharing, exploring, and learning about dance styles from around the world. Our club holds meetings twice a month, where students come together to learn and collaborate. Since it's formation, I have served as Treasurer, and as the Vice President during my senior year.

Club Activities

Dance Features:

Dance features are presentations from club members on their dance style. Students teach us about the history of their dance style, and the importance that dance has to them. The presenter also teaches the rest of the club some dance steps and their significance.

Galley Walks:

During a regular school year, students would bring unique costume pieces, dance instruments, or any other significant device to school to share with the rest of the club. With remote learning, club meetings were held over zoom, so a gallery walk was done through a group presentation instead.

End of the Year Performances:

At the end of the year, the club performs a dance that consists of dance steps from the dances present in the club, accompanied by neutral music. The theme or message of the performance is usually nature, and the actions used throughout the performance correlate to that in each specific dance. We begin working on this activity in February and present it in May. Our performance allows members to experiment with new dance styles and expand their knowledge and practice of these styles.
